Maison Martin Margiela is een naam die diep geworteld is in de mode-industrie, dankzij de getalenteerde Belgische ontwerper achter het label. Geboren in 1957 in België en opgegroeid in Limburg, voltooide Martin Margiela zijn opleiding aan de "Academie voor Schone Kunsten" in Antwerpen. Na het behalen van zijn diploma in 1981, begon zijn carrière als freelance modeontwerper. Een belangrijke stap in zijn loopbaan was zijn tijd als assistent van de iconische Franse ontwerper Jean Paul Gaultier, waar hij drie jaar doorbracht.
In 1997 kreeg hij de prestigieuze taak om als hoofdontwerper voor het couturehuis Hermès te werken, een positie die hij tot 2004 bekleedde. Zijn eigen merk, "Maison Martin Margiela", zag het levenslicht in 1988, opgericht in samenwerking met de Brusselse zakenvrouw Jenny Meirens. Het merk werd in 2002 verkocht aan Renzo Rosso, de drijvende kracht achter de Diesel Group. Na een indrukwekkende carrière in de mode-industrie koos Martin Margiela ervoor om zich in 2009 terug te trekken uit de publieke schijnwerpers en zich te focussen op zijn privéleven.
